What is the paradox of the European elections – this is the focus of Evgeny Kanev’s latest analysis, published on Facebook. In it he writes:

“That elections are more psychology than reason is shown by the results not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe.

What is the paradox of the European elections?

If most polls are to be believed, the vote went to the right, driven by the successes of far-right parties in major Western countries, due mostly to problems with migration and the economy. However, these far-right parties are generally proposing that these problems should be addressed by national governments because, in their understanding, Brussels is to blame for them. To the ‘problems’ we add aid to Ukraine, which for most of these right-wing parties is further fuelling the war and taking resources away from nation states to fund their domestic commitments.

The paradox lies in the fact that people still do not understand that solving these problems is not in the power of any individual country, but only of the EU. Only an EU armed with even greater powers and a budget so that it can enforce a single policy on borders, defence and security. Ergo, this is Europe’s Achilles heel and the reason why it cannot compete successfully with the US and China.

The problem of migration cannot be solved without the implementation of a common migration policy to which every country contributes.

The security problems cannot be solved without a common army, a nuclear policy and a plan to defend the continent.

The economic problems cannot be solved without a truly single commodity, capital, financial, labour and digital market.

Conversely, voting to the right will exacerbate these problems. And it will sooner or later force the parties to put the project of a United States of Europe on the table – if it is not too late.

For the disillusionment with Europe is largely due to the EU’s design, dominated by impotent national governments, which impotence is cleverly attributed to Brussels, courtesy of Russian propaganda on social media and Kremlin-backed extremist parties. It is clear to the geopoliticians that Russia has no interest in the EU and is doing everything possible for its implosion.

The problem is also desperate in our country – because we are geographically, culturally and mentally on the periphery of Europe and this issue cannot enter the agenda of Bulgarian politics.”

An increase in pre-trial proceedings for drugs and illegal migration is reported in May 2024
