„I am not at all worried about what actions will be taken or will not be taken to investigate the chief prosecutor. I have no worries, given my powers. If you want, judge and close the prosecutor’s office! „

This was stated today by the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev in response to the opinions of the Legal Commission in connection with the Report of the Prosecutor’s Office for the first 8 months for 2020 provided by him yesterday.

Today, the Parliamentary Legal Committee presented its motives in the plenary hall, with which it supported the report of the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev yesterday. We remind you that yesterday the parliament heard the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev, who gave a report on the activity of the prosecutor’s office during the last 8 months.

His statement was a response to what BSP leader Cornelia Ninova said in connection with the fact that the party would not support his report on the work of the prosecution, which he presented yesterday. According to Ninova, Geshev’s report was „a lot of statistics without concrete answers to questions of public interest that the chief prosecutor tried to give in part”. Geshev added:

„We want a constant dialogue with the National Assembly and the individual commissions, because we are clearly aware that the results that Bulgarian society expects can be achieved through interaction between the authorities and in compliance with the division and control between the authorities. This includes not only interaction between the three authorities, but also between the institutions – the law enforcement system, the court and the prosecutor’s office.

Regarding how long it takes for an investigation, Geshev said it is determined by law and does not depend on the chief prosecutor. He added:

„I will not bore you with statistics, but it shows that the work of the prosecution is permanently improving.“

As a result of the activity of the Prosecutor’s Office, in partnership with the services and the Ministry of Interior, 307 specialized police operations were conducted on the territory of 441 settlements in 27 districts. 497 crimes were detected and 941 people were detained. More than 500 pre-trial proceedings have been instituted, Geshev said, stressing a 22% drop in thefts on a five-month basis since the beginning of the year and a 19% drop in robberies. Car thefts have also decreased by 13%.

We remind you that yesterday Geshev reported a decline in telephone fraud for the first 5 months by 95%, domestic theft – by 22%, robbery by 19% and motor vehicles – by 13%. 2,300 corruption investigations have been conducted and 156 convicted of such crimes. He said that the prosecutor’s office does not investigate on political grounds, but perpetrators of crimes, and stressed that for natural reasons for corruption, most of the investigators are representatives of the government. He again emphasized the steadily declining number of returned cases, which are currently only 2.8%. The acquitted persons with an effective judicial act are 1.9%.
