„We can no longer allow historical time to be wasted, nor can we be subject to populism and lies.“
This was stated by President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev during the opening of the 47th National Assembly today.
The important national consensus is that of law and justice. If we want this parliament to be lasting and useful, it must return public life to the rule of law. Without justice and legality, all good intentions are doomed to failure, the head of state stressed, adding: „It is up to you to close this parliament in the era of transition.“
“Our society is still looking for a way out of the corruption status quo, but it has said ‘no’ to the conquered state and the restoration of authoritarianism. It is time for a national consensus that contains important priorities”, the president added.
He described as an urgent mission „the dismantling of the prosecutor’s umbrella over corruption and abuse“, which „ensures impunity for both major corrupt officials and domestic criminals who harass Bulgarians forgotten by the state. I hope Democrats on the left and right are convinced that this is the key to the future”.
Rumen Radev noted from the rostrum of the National Assembly:
“Parliament’s mission itself is built around a consensus on democracy. Deep social processes of restoring democracy and statehood are taking place in Bulgaria. You are called to breathe new life into parliamentary scrutiny, which has been virtually abolished in recent years. To create conditions for the revival of free speech as a guarantor of transparency and pluralism, to return the citizens to government. To improve the electoral process, the loss of confidence in the political class in all of us is reflected in the withdrawal from the ballot box during this year’s election marathon.”
No less consensus is needed on the social and economic crisis. Fighting the pandemic also remains a priority, Radev stressed.
