On the last Wednesday of February, schools around the world join forces in solidarity against bullying of students by celebrating „Pink Shirt Day“. The initiative, which started in Canada in 2007, sends a strong message of support and tolerance. Although the goal is well-intentioned, some parents expressed their outrage at the choice of colour for the campaign’s symbol.

The colour pink, although chosen with the best of intentions, can create unwanted discomfort among some students, especially boys. This highlights the importance of involving all students in the campaign in a way that does not cause them embarrassment. The parents contacted Iskra.bg asking if the pink color of the T-shirts could be changed to more neutral colours.

They proposed a white Т-shirt for boys that could serve as a universal symbol of peace and solidarity while avoiding the potential discomfort associated with color choice. According to them, this could contribute to wider acceptance and participation in the initiative, while maintaining its main goal – combating bullying and violence in schools.

It is important to note that the criticism does not undermine the main purpose of the campaign, but rather highlights the need for ongoing dialogue between organizers, schools, parents and students. Understanding and mutual respect can contribute to creating a more supportive environment where every student feels comfortable expressing their solidarity.

„Pink Shirt Day“ is an important moment to raise awareness of the importance of the fight against school bullying. Rethinking the symbolism can reinforce the campaign’s message and encourage even greater participation, allowing students to choose how they want to show their support. The fight against school bullying is a common cause that transcends differences and unites society in the pursuit of a better future for all children.
