At the height of the summer season and in close proximity to houses, hotels and other accommodation in the resort town of Pomorie ponies are bred. Their owner is a woman of German origin who lives in the town.
The problem is extremely serious because the ponies are kept directly in the yard of the German woman’s house. Because of the animals, horse flies, rats and snakes have infested the area – all of which threaten the lives and health of Pomorie residents because they are potential carriers of infections.
The case has been around for a long time. Those living in the neighbourhood have been fighting to defend their rights before various institutions, but so far without success. That is why they turned to Iskra.bg with a request for assistance, very worried about their health and their livelihood.
Iskra.bg responded and is trying with all possible means to help enforce the law and to get the ponies out of the yard of the German citizen’s house. That is why we have submitted signals to three institutions – the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, the Regional Health Inspectorate in Burgas and Pomorie Municipality. So far the institutions have shown willingness to fulfil their legal powers. Whether this will happen and in what timeframe, remains to be seen. The the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and the Regional Health Inspectorate have transferred our signals to the Municipality of Pomorie according to their competence.
The local government explained to Iskra.bg that a special committee was formed some time ago on this case and a fine was imposed on the German citizen. Mayor Ivan Alexiev stressed that he did not have the legal authority to remove the ponies because there was a gap in the legislation on the one hand, and on the other – their owner pleaded that they were pets.
Time will tell whether the institutions will fulfill their obligations under the law and the residents of Pomorie will once again be able to live in peace and welcome tourists, undisturbed by rats, snakes and horse flies, as well as the unbearable smell that lingers in the air.
The government is rushing to appoint a new General Director of the Port Infrastructure Agency. Why?
