Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov asked the National Assembly to lift the immunities of six MPs. The request was made in connection with various criminal proceedings and evidence of crimes.
Who are the MPs and what are they accused of?
- Lena Borislavova /“We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria”/ – accused of a document crime related to the use of false documents in 2021.
- Radostin Vassilev /MEH/ – proceedings for coercion related to a case from 2023. The investigation is being conducted by the Sofia City Court.
- Veselin Veshev and Angel Georgiev /Vazrazhdane/ – Charges of hooliganism and inflicting minor injuries on police officers in 2021.
- Günay Daloolu /“DPS – New Beginnings“/ – Accused of coercion, including threats to secure preferences in the elections for the 49th National Assembly.
- Mario Rangelov /“MRF – Democracy, Rights and Freedoms“/ – Charged with crimes against the political rights of citizens. According to the investigation, he led a group to secure property benefits in exchange for votes in the elections for the 51st National Assembly.
According to the Constitution of Bulgaria /Article 70/, the removal of the immunity of a deputy is possible only with the permission of the National Assembly or with the written consent of the deputy concerned. On 9 December, Sarafov also submitted a request to lift the immunity of Kiril Petkov /“We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria”/ / in connection with an investigation led by the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office.
With the requests to lift the immunities of six MPs, the prosecutor’s office again raises the issue of the responsibility of political figures. The investigations are yet to show how these cases will develop and what the decision of the National Assembly will be.
