The danger of serious drought in our country is approaching and it will be very difficult for the future minister. This is what the Minister of Environment and Water Emil Dimitrov predicted to “NOVA”. He pointed out that everyone wants to join the 52 nationally significant dams, which are managed by the Ministry of Environment and Water. 15 of them are for drinking and household use and as many for agricultural purposes.

The department for which I am responsible is huge and is neglected. We are facing a water crisis. If it does not rain and snow this year, next year we will have tangible problems and the current way of managing the water resource will be inapplicable in conditions of increasing drought. We have to make tough decisions next year. Who will take them? It will not be easy for the next minister. Everything will be fine until the end of my term, but then what will we do?”

It has not rained in Eastern Bulgaria for years, the line minister said, commenting that this has caused serious problems – the valley from the “Koprinka” Dam to the Tundzha River has dried up. He also gave an example with the “Kamchia” Dam, and asked rhetorically:

„Should we wait until May-June next year or take action now?“

The problem with “Kamchia“ is that it supplies the North and South Black Sea coasts, but it has 59 million cubic meters. With a consumption of 8 million per month, we can last a few more months if there is no heavy rain and snow to fill it. Measures must be taken now. The Prime Minister has assigned me to work on several options specifically for the Black Sea coast in order to solve the problem. This problem must be solved by the whole Council of Ministers. Several dams urgently need to be repaired and hooked up to the derivation that supplies Burgas. „

Minister Dimitrov also commented on the political situation in our country. According to him, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has met the expectations of citizens by raising the issue of a new Constitution. He believes that the dream of many MPs for a lifetime term is about to come true.

It may turn out that there is a Grand National Assembly in which a number of ideas are discussed and there is always a situation“ you get to the end, you start from the beginning.“

The  Environment minister believes that the ordinary National Assembly can change the small details that need to be changed. He said he was not happy to be called a „thug“ , „but this happens in the government„. Dimitrov also shared his opinion on compulsory military service:

I was in the barracks for a very short time. I think that if you raise the salary to BGN 3,000, there will be many people willing to work. It’s good to make habits, but do you agree to go somewhere in a tent because of patriotic duty?“
