The monthly analysis of the data on the work of the Specialised Interagency Unit between the Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor’s Office to support the investigation of pre-trial proceedings related to drugs and illegal migration shows that in the period from 01 to 30 April this year, 771 pre-trial proceedings were initiated against organised criminal groups and individuals for crimes related to the production, possession and distribution of narcotic substances, and 153 pre-trial proceedings for illegal trafficking in human beings and illegal migration. During the reporting period, 505 joint specialised police operations were conducted to counter illegal migration and 462 to counter drug-related crime.
875 persons were arrested for production, processing, acquisition, possession, distribution and trafficking of narcotic substances. 8 laboratories/plants for production and cultivation of narcotic substances were detected. Among the more characteristic cases is the investigation of nearly 403 kg of heroin found on 20.04.2024 during an inspection at the checkpoint „Kapitan Andreevo“ in a truck entering from the Republic of Turkey. In mid-April this year, a specialised operation was also carried out to counter drug crimes in the areas around the schools in the town of Ankara. Sofia. In the course of the operation 295 persons were checked for possession of narcotic substances and 39 pre-trial proceedings were initiated.
The data from the analysis show that the number of pre-trial proceedings related to illegal migration is 16 more than in March 2024.
Out of 266 illegally staying third-country nationals detained, most were detained by the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – 88, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Stara Zagora – 55 and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Plovdiv – 51.
For the period 1-30 April 2024, 358 court acts for drug-related offences and 134 for offences under Articles 279, 280 and 281 of the Criminal Code – illegal smuggling across the border of individuals or groups of people and unlawful assistance to foreign citizens to reside or transit in/cross the country – have entered into force.
The specialised inter-agency unit was set up by a joint order between the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Ministry of the Interior in August 2023 to support the investigation of specific types of offences. One of its main activities is the monitoring of pre-trial proceedings initiated and conducted.
