A record number of water accidents last summer ended fatally, according to the report of the University Hospital Burgas. This is 10 people more than in the summer of 2023 and previous years.

If the data is divided by the number of days in the active season – July and August, it means one life lost per day. Almost as many are cases of patients rescued after drowning and passed through the Emergency Department.

The statistics report an almost equal number of incidents involving Bulgarians and foreigners. Unfortunately, among both the dead and the rescued there are small children left unattended by hotel pools and on the beach.

UMHAT-Burgas reports an extremely busy summer season. From June 1 to September 15, 2024, 14,880 patients, or an average of 150 people per day, passed through the largest hospital in Southeastern Bulgaria. 700 of them were foreigners. 90% of the patients were admitted on an emergency basis and were referred to UMHAT-Burgas as the only place where round-the-clock medical care can be provided and there is simultaneous availability of medical specialists from over 30 specialties. It is the only place with departments that no other medical institution in the region has – a multidisciplinary emergency department, rheumatology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, nephrology, internal medicine with hematology, skin and venereal diseases.
