“I’m quitting sport because they delay our salaries, they delay my bonuses from the Olympics. They are making fun of us.”
This is what the bronze medalist from Paris 2024 Bozhidar Andreev announced, after a few days ago it became clear that our athlete is out of the Bulgarian squad for the world championship in Bahrain, which will be between 6 and 15 December. He should receive approximately 200 000 leva Olympic bonus and 11 unpaid wages.
“Yes, that’s right! Some people wrote that the sport was ending it due to construction, which is not the case. I’m stopping for one reason – that they are making fun of us, not giving us our salaries on time! It’s been 4-5 months approximately and the bonuses are not being sent. For what reason, I do not know!? But this is a mockery to the athletes and I just… It’s hard for me to stop, but I can’t continue with this mockery”, said Andreev.
Recall that in the summer Andreev made a similar statement, saying that he wanted to devote himself to secondary education and then study at the National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski”. A month later, his coach said that the athlete had changed his mind and would fight for a medal at the world championships. At the moment, however, he is adamant:
“I’m determined, determined for the second year they are making fun of us like this, they are making fun of all of us, not just me, they are making fun of all the athletes! I’m already determined to stop it! If I continue, next year, it will be the same way again. I’ve spoken to my coach. We were going to keep preparing for the worlds. But I just can’t go on like this because there’s no money for training and no financial backing. I still have a family to feed and support.”
That’s exactly why he would go into construction – to make a living. Andreev notes that he trained for 16 years and in the end Bulgaria did not respond to him with anything, only with congratulations, a diploma, a plaque. He says that the medal is not for Bulgaria, but for people who are not among us. According to him, there is only one person who can bring him back to the gym and that is his coach Plamen Bratoychev.
