If everything goes according to plan, by the end of this year we will have a ready Bulgarian vaccine against the coronavirus. Professor Andrey Chorbanov, the head of the Laboratory of Experimental Immunology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, made this bold statement to “BNT”.
Although there is no shortage of volunteers to test the vaccine to begin any human trials, it must go through a bunch of theoretical formulations. This is the first step that will show researchers its effectiveness and enable its subsequent further consumption.
Professor Chorbanov is not optimistic about the anti-epidemic measures that our country is taking. According to him, the spread of the coronavirus has already become large enough to minimize the damage. His hope is that the number of potential infections will soon decrease because people will have encountered the virus.
The professor noted several serious gaps in the testing system. One person could be tested repeatedly, but the result will be reported each time as received by a new person. Realistically, this is a false result, showing a larger number of people tested, while in practice they are significantly fewer.
On the other hand, it is right to take into account the fact that in a large part of the population, the encounter with the virus takes place without any symptoms. Accordingly, this part has not been tested, i.e. we do not even know that the disease has occurred.
The statistics that we compile on a daily basis at the moment are based on divination rather than reasonable objectivity.
The most effective, Chorbanov believes, would be to close an entire neighborhood and test from the first to the last person. This is as unnecessary as it is pointless. As of today, such testing would not help get out of the epidemic sooner. The only way is for the immune system in young children and young people to cope as quickly and easily as possible, because „passing the virus through this very mobile population will allow no one to transmit it to at-risk groups,“ said Prof. Chorbanov and added:
„Various qualities are attributed to the virus – such as insidious, vile, etc. It’s a piece of a molecule, don’t attribute such human qualities to it.“
The imposition of fear in most people leads to problems in the health system. Subconsciously instilling the belief that they will have a very severe illness makes many sufferers seek medical attention. The truth is that often there is no such need.
