„It is time for political action by the government – an extraordinary convergent report to be requested and Bulgaria to guarantee its entry into the Eurozone from January 1, 2026.“
This was stated to the media on behalf of “Democratic Bulgaria” (DB) by MP from „We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria“ (WCC-DB) Martin Dimitrov. According to him, the official data released today by Eurostat on the average annual inflation for the past 12 months is favorable for Bulgaria and the government no longer needs to hide or delay but to act. He urged the government not only to ask for a convergent report, but also to adopt the 2025 budget, along with DB’s proposed cost-cutting measures.
Dimitrov reminded that together with MPs from WCTC-DB, he submitted a draft resolution to the National Assembly last week, which obliges the Council of Ministers to conduct an informative campaign on the benefits of adopting the euro and the experience of other countries. The campaign is set to start on March 1 and should be thoroughly reported to parliament by July 1.
“This campaign should address all malicious and hybrid attacks suggesting price increases after the introduction of the euro, which have not occurred in the countries that have adopted it, and compare Bulgaria with other countries with a currency board – Estonia and Lithuania, to demonstrate that joining the Eurozone leads to economic growth and does not cause extraordinary inflation, as certain individuals claim,”, the MP said.
“If our own government doesn’t play a double game, if it doesn’t sabotage us, our chances of joining the Eurozone next year are enormous,”, Martin Dimitrov explained. According to him, we meet the criteria and Minister of Finance, Temenuzhka Petkova has acknowledged in Brussels to our partners that we have a good track record for a stable fiscal policy, even though she says one thing there and something different here.
Describing the inflation data in Bulgaria as favorable, the economist is convinced that no one would nitpick about which exact decimal place rounding is done, as our indicators are close to the threshold. According to him, a political discussion with the European Commission should take place now.
“No one has ever been rejected for some commas, now is the time for us to politically shape our membership in the Eurozone,”, Dimitrov concluded.
