Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev announced that the changes to the Constitution proposed by GERB satisfy the demands of society. He stressed that Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has also expressed readiness to resign, which also fulfills the wishes of the protesting Bulgarian citizens. According to Donchev, machine voting in sections with more than 300 voters is a step in the right direction.
The Deputy Prime Minister believes that the way democracy works should be changed, because there can be only personal changes after the tension.
He stressed that the proposed changes to the Constitution were made in response to expectations not only of this protest, which has been going on for 41 days. Slogans for a new basic law have been raised during demonstrations over the past 10 years. In addition, the Constitution was written 30 years ago and there has long been a debate over whether it corresponds to the current situation in the country.
According to Donchev, members of the government also took part in writing the changes. He gave the example of Ministers Danail Kirilov and Ekaterina Zaharieva. External and internal experts were also involved. He himself has also given opinions and suggestions on the issue. Donchev stressed that in the end what the new Constitution will look like will be decided by the Grand National Assembly.
Regarding the IMRO’s proposal to return the conscription service, according to Donchev, this is not the topic that currently excites the public. But he described some of the ideas as interesting.
