“As a war! Three trucks of wood were set on fire in the village of Svezhen, most likely in protest against the wood mafia in the forests. A criminal act that could have been avoided if the link between forestry and society had not been lost under the pressure of political and corrupt interests.“
This was written by MP Alexander Dunchev on Facebook. According to him, the connection in question in the area of Svezhen and Sredna Sarnena Gora has been lost for a long time, because indications of public intolerance of forest abuse (a topic that has been taboo since yesterday) are not from yesterday and clarifies:
Only a week ago, at the signal of the mayor and locals, we found excessive logging by a powerful company in the pine forest in one of the catchment areas of Svezhen, and most violations have just been confirmed in the response of the Forest Agency.
The struggle for the water supply zone of Svezhen and the protection of tourist routes (including to the Svezhen hut) began in 2015.
For years, locals have been warning that heavy lorries with wood are destroying roads in the mountains, and tires have burst. The MP concluded the following:
“Unfortunately, we can no longer transfer the responsibility for this incident to the former rulers.“ Our measures to depoliticize the forest system and protect professionalism in forests, our measures to stop schemes and protect respectable forestry, and even our measures to protect water supply areas from excessive logging and new forest highways have been rejected or blocked. They all burned in the trash of political clientelism.”
