President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev announced today that he is postponing the upcoming parliamentary elections, which were to be held on 20 October. This decision was taken following a disagreement with Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov remaining in his post in the new caretaker government nominated by Goritsa Grancharova-Kozhareva.
During his meeting with the nominated caretaker prime minister Grancharova-Kozhareva, President Radev made it clear that he would not sign the decree appointing the new government unless the interior minister was replaced. He gave a deadline of 15 hours to change this decision, stressing that there will be no swearing-in tomorrow and the current caretaker government of Dimitar Glavchev will continue to work.
The President called on MPs to complete the so-called „house book“ from which potential caretaker ministers can be chosen, stressing the importance of selecting suitable candidates for key ministerial posts.
This political situation creates new challenges for Bulgarian politics and leaves open the question of the future of parliamentary elections and the composition of the next caretaker government.
