Hospitals are facing a serious challenge due to the record number of new cases of COVID-19 in Bulgaria and the increasing hospitalizations. According to the Unified Information System, there have been 4,851 new cases of coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, with 19,869 tests performed. Thus, the total number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic is 312,741, with 60,832 active cases.
There were 2,751 people cured in the last 24 hours and 239,692 for the entire period. 8,927 people are currently in hospital for treatment, of whom 729 are in intensive care units.
Despite the experience gained by doctors, deaths continue to increase. In recent days, more than 100 people have died per day.
The medics pointed out several reasons for this, “DarikNews” reported. In the first place, these are the new strains. According to them, they are more contagious and the disease itself is more severe. In addition, many people neglect their condition and seek medical help when the disease is already seriously advanced.
Crowded hospitals put medics in very difficult situations. Such is the case of Dr. Alexander Serafimov from the Burgas Main Hospital. During his weekends, he did not indulge in well-deserved rest, but traveled to Isperih, where he was on duty to help at the local hospital.
There are also problems with the beds, as many medical institutions are already experiencing a serious shortage. Such is the case of the hospital in Gotse Delchev, which will have to return patients today. The reason is that there are only seven free beds, and 10 people are usually hospitalized per day.
There are no places in the medical establishments in Yambol and Lovech, where new ones will have to be opened. The situation is similar in other places in the country.
