Co-Chairman of „Democratic Bulgaria“ /DB/ Hristo Ivanov said that if the constitutional reform of the Prosecutor’s Office, for which many political forces declare support, is carried out in the 49th National Assembly, many of the national tasks, including finding a way out of the political crisis, will be easier to solve. Speaking on behalf of the parliamentary group at the closing of the 48th National Assembly, he noted that he was moderately optimistic that this would happen.
According to Ivanov, DB was the most civilised political force in this Parliament. He thanked all the MPs, not only from the group, but also from the other parties, with whom constructive work had been done. And warned:
„The fact that the DB is well-intentioned should not make you think that we will be someone’s shield and turn a blind eye to unprincipled compromises!“
He then turned to the chairwoman of the GERB group: „Mrs. Atanasova, I asked you 3 times in the talks for the first government term, are you ready to commit to constitutional reform, but you did not answer me.“
According to the leader of „Yes, Bulgaria“, the country is not just in a series of short-lived parliaments – „we are in a moment when the parliamentary republic is suspended, it is put on the chopping block“. Because, in his words, Parliament cannot produce not just momentary or even hidden majorities, but the parliamentary republic itself has begun to permanently mutate into a model inherited as if from communism, when the National Assembly met seasonally and the Council of State ruled, which then became the presidency.
„Today, we have a quasi-presidential regime. And this is not a momentary curiosity, but indicates a serious disease of the political system,“, Ivanov said.
The co-chairman of the DB reminded that the unification entered the 48th National Assembly with several clear priorities: ensuring the rule of law, membership in Schengen and the Eurozone, guaranteeing national security threatened by the conflict in Ukraine, measures to deputize the country, including achieving of energy security. He reported that results have been achieved on some of these topics, but in the overall balance the unfinished business is more.
„We did not take a decisive step on judicial reform. It turned out that we were ready to sacrifice the euro area as well, finding procedural excuses for this. But when you try to hide behind procedural moves and assign „Vazrazhdane“ to play the role of a mouthpiece, it is obvious,“, Ivanov said.
He reproached GERB, MRF and BSP for having majorities, but not projecting a government: „After you did not participate in the efforts for the second term, in the third it was seen that you already had a majority, but you did not implement it. This may seem clever to you, but the citizens will see the real state of affairs.“
Ivanov thanked Prof. Gabrovski and Academician Denkov for taking on the thankless job of being prime minister-designate.
„We will be able to restart parliamentary democracy when not someone takes all the power, but when, accepting our differences, we start pursuing the big national tasks,“, the DB co-chairman said.
The politician predicted that the election campaign would not be positive and stated the intention of his formation that in the 49th National Assembly they would only support a democratic and courageous reformist government.
