On January 10, Kiril Petkov, leader of „We Continue the Change“, will appear at the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office to face charges in the case regarding the arrest of Boyko Borissov. The case concerns actions taken by Petkov on March 17, 2022, when he was accused of exceeding his powers as Prime Minister. According to the prosecution, Kiril Petkov:

  • He unlawfully instructed investigative officers from the General Directorate of National Police (GDNP) to initiate pre-trial proceedings against Borissov, Vladislav Goranov, and Sevdelina Arnaudova.
  • He violated the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) by ordering interrogations and conducting searches and seizures without the necessary court authorizations.
  • He acted with the intent to damage the reputation of the detained individuals and caused significant harmful consequences for the state, including undermining trust in the executive branch.

Petkov voluntarily waived his parliamentary immunity, describing the actions of the prosecution as „pathetic attempts by mobsters“ to undermine trust in him.

Petkov’s party members are planning a protest in his support in front of the Prosecutor’s Office building on Cherkovna Street. Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, in addition to requesting Petkov’s immunity, has also focused attention on other MPs, including Lena Borislava. This suggests an expansion of the scope of investigations that the prosecution is conducting against figures from „We Continue the Change.“

The case raised questions about the use of power and the independence of institutions in Bulgaria. The reactions of Petkov and his supporters will be an important indicator of public attitudes toward the actions of the prosecution and trust in the judicial system.

The development of the case is expected to spark a wide public debate and influence the political situation in the country.
