The Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angel Kunchev made a gloomy prognosis for the spread of the coronavirus in our country. He stressed that in the last two weeks the incidence has been rising. The main reason for this is the British variant of COVID-19, which is circulating in our country. The 14-day incidence reached 285 per 100,000 people. This ranks Bulgaria 18th in the European Union and 5th in the Balkans.

An even bigger problem is that after the British strain, the South African, Brazilian and Nigerian strains are expected to come to Bulgaria. According to Kunchev, these two varieties of COVID-19 are very dangerous.

He explained that the Czech Republic was currently the most affected country in the EU. If its data are imposed on Bulgaria, it means that we have 12,000 infected per day. Kunchev said that whether we will reach these huge numbers within the current third wave depends on compliance with anti-epidemic measures.

In addition, there was a very big difference between the different regions in our country, which required a regional approach, according to the National Operational Headquarters. For example, the incidence in Kyustendil district is 487 per 100,000 people, while in Targovishte it is below 100 per 100,000 people.

Kunchev also commented on the decision of the hospital in Burgas to follow the planned example, welcoming it, because in this way more patients with coronavirus infection would be able to be hospitalized.
