Minister of Youth and Sports Vesela Lecheva commented to journalists on the state of sports facilities in the country, the multifunctional sports hall in Burgas, the „Red Flag“ complex and the possibility of building a new National Stadium.
„The conditions under which Bulgarian athletes train still cannot reach European standards. Our desire is to make a good policy so that sports facilities have a European look. Together with the board of directors of the National Sports Base, we have to discuss how the BGN 1.7 million saved from the software contract in the company, which was terminated, can be invested in the best way,„, Vesela Lecheva said.
The Minister of Youth and Sports added that one of the ideas was to expand the rhythmic gymnastics hall at the „Rakovski Stadium“, where our national teams train. Vesela Lecheva also commented on the condition of the base in Belmeken, which continues to be a preferred training place for both Bulgarian athletes and many elite competitors from Europe. The high mountain sports base needs some urgent investments, without which it cannot meet the winter – such as a snowplow and a generator.
„The sports infrastructure is morally outdated and needs huge funds. In the 1980s, a large-scale sports facility was built, but in recent years very little money has been allocated to its maintenance and restoration. There is a lack of training facilities in our country. Within the next 10 years, each government must allocate BGN 50 million to rebuild the sports facilities in Bulgaria. This year, the funds that the ministry has provided for this are within BGN 8 million,“, Minister Lecheva explained.
Minister Lecheva informed that she had held a meeting with Chief Architect of Sofia Zdravko Zdravkov. Then they discussed the topics of the „Red Flag“ complex and the possibility of building a new National Stadium.
„The issue of a new National Stadium is before every administration and it cannot be resolved in the mandate of an acting minister. It is important to know that cooperation is needed on the part of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the BFU and the Sofia Municipality,„, Lecheva noted.
