Today’s decision of the Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs in the 51st National Assembly is not a reason for joy. This is what Lena Borislavova, MP from “We Continue the Change”, wrote on Facebook. A little earlier, the legal committee decided to terminate the procedure for the election of Borislav Sarafov as prosecutor general. But the decision is not just that:
“Today, the legal committee adopted on second reading to terminate the procedure for the election of Sarafov, but rejected all other measures and texts that could prevent us from having a second Sarafov tomorrow.
It also rejected the texts that prevent Sarafov from returning as interim Prosecutor General.
A vote is to be taken in the Chamber.
Today’s majority vote in the Legal Affairs Committee is no cause for rejoicing. It is not a victory for the rule of law. It has temporarily stopped an outrage, such as would have been the concreting of Sarafov for seven years in a procedure with no competitors, but it has not deprived him of the opportunity to continue doing what he is currently doing.
This is not real judicial reform. But only a timid step to stop an outrageous permanent appointment.
GERB cannot stand up to Peevski, and maybe they don’t want to. That is why the negotiations with DB did not continue.
But maybe no surprises. Unfortunately.”
