After the possible approval of the new master plan by the Municipality of Burgas for the transformation of Terminal „East 1“ / Port of Burgas / in order to expand the „Access Zone“ of the „Organization for the Protection of Bulgarian Citizens“ /OPBC/ we consider this inexpedient, as this would lead to the decommissioning of the 10th to 13th cargo ships berths, which is in itself economically unjustified. The 10th to 13th cargo ship berths, even when they are designed, they are designed for specialized cargo flows, and are extremely important for the security of the country as they are also provided for wartime plans.
The annual transshipment capacity is 900,000 tons and there is an existing adjacent double track military ramp type Roro. The 10th to 13th berths are also extremely valuable because they are designed with a draft draft of 8.80 meters on 300 linear meters and 7.60 on 150 linear meters with clear characteristics for Ro-Ropax, Roro and Rolo.
That is why the position of the OPBC is that the new master plan proposed by the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company is not in the interest of the residents of Burgas. Yes – there will be gardens for walks, yes – it will be more beautiful, but for a port city such as the city of Burgas it is much better and economically viable to develop port activity as the income from it is many times greater than for the development of tourist activity.
It is unacceptable to do one thing at the expense of another. We will insist on this and do everything necessary to review the project and rethink the „master plan“, and to find a balance between economic development and the „access zone“, and this can only happen if the 10th to 13th berths retain their expediency, namely to remain cargo areas.
