The stricter measures that were proposed yesterday will not limit the COVID-19 pandemic in Bulgaria, according to Assoc. Prof. Andrey Chorbanov from the Institute of Microbiology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He noted on „bTV“ that enough countries in Europe have introduced a full „lockdown“ and despite this, their indicators have not changed much. He gave the example of Spain, Great Britain and France, where morbidity is extremely high despite the measures and vice versa – Sweden, where there are no strict restrictions, but the data are much more optimistic.
Associate Professor Chorbanov also commented that his thesis is shared by many doctors on the front line. According to him, this is not an amateur idea or guerrilla warfare, just to oppose government measures. He notes that the idea that such a closure would stop people-to-people contacts is naive.
The restrictions that were proposed over the past day will reduce the pressure on the health care system, but not by more than 15-20 percent. According to the microbiologist, we cannot hide from the virus, as it is transmitted by airborne droplets and predicts that in a few months a large part of the population will encounter the coronavirus, and many people will not even understand.
Many people are terribly frightened, the expert noted. He cites a report by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which states that people who work in their homes are the most frightened because they read a lot of things on the Internet without a filter. Prof. Chorbanov is adamant that the health care system needs to be better organized to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The vaccine should be given with priority to the risk groups – the elderly and medics. Then he explained:
„Anyone who is vaccinated in the coming months with the rapidly registered vaccines will know that they are participating in a clinical trial. He will be the person to provide data on efficiency.“
