The situation in the 51st National Assembly continues to be unprecedented. For 24 days now, the deputies have failed to elect a speaker, and the attempts are reduced to successive failed votes and heated debates. Nadezhda Yordanova from “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” said in support of Atanas Atanasov:

“Atanasov has the political experience and moral backbone to push an agenda that the public expects – pro-European and anti-corruption.”

BSP-United Left also defended its candidate Natalia Kiselova. Borislav Gutsanov stressed:

“The support of leading NGOs and lawyers for Assoc. The support of leading lawyers and legal experts for Ms. Kiselova is a clear signal of the public trust she has.”

Toma Bikov from GERB accused “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” of political indecision:

“Your group is divided. Half wants elections, the other does not want government. We cannot support your candidate unless you publicly ask for our support.”

“I don’t understand why we are wasting so much time. Instead of digging into the past and explaining who is more guilty, we should focus on what people expect – stability and governance”, Boyko Borissov added. Assen Vassilev from “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” criticised GERB for their refusal to sign a declaration isolating Delyan Peevski from power:

“This document is a clear indicator of who is really ready to fight corruption. Your refusal shows that you have dependencies that you cannot overcome. The state stands hostage to political games.”

Vassilev did not spare his criticism of the alleged budget deficit:

“Whoever talks about an 18 billion deficit has a hole in his head. These are not numbers, but an attempt at manipulation.”

“Another day of chaos and exposure. We stand here, but for what? This is not working anymore. We need clear solutions and an end to this agony”, said DPS-New Beginnings leader Delyan Peevski. He added that a new project and new elections are foreseen:

“People want elections. Let there be a clear winner who will take over the governance of the country.”

In the ninth attempt to elect a chairman, MPs continue to exchange sharp retorts. The lack of consensus leaves the National Assembly in paralysis as the public watches with growing frustration. Without real action and compromise, the political crisis risks further deepening distrust of institutions and leaving Bulgaria without clear governance at a critical time for the country.
