On 26 December, Father’s Day, parents are organising a protest under the slogan “No to parental alienation. Their main demand is for changes in the Family Code to introduce equal rights for both parents when raising a child after divorce. The protest highlights the need for shared parenting, which organizers say will allow children to grow up with both mothers and fathers present.

Lawyer Plamen Borisov, one of the campaigners, points out that shared parenting benefits both children and mothers.

“It is not good for mothers to be a parent 24/7. They should have time for themselves, and fathers should take their share of responsibility. A child’s time should be divided roughly equally, he told. Borisov adds that parents can reach an agreement if there is respect between them. Problems arise when there is a lack of good communication and willingness to cooperate.

A few days ago, bills were tabled that cover the possibility of both parents sharing the care and responsibilities for the child.

“This is an important step to ensure a better environment for children, said lawyer Yordanka Bekirska. Desislava Avdjieva of the Foundation for Shared Parenting notes that the number of fathers seeking support has increased significantly over the past year. She says:

“The stories we receive are from fathers, but also from mothers who want better legislation for their children.”

The Father’s Day protest highlights the need for legislative changes to affirm equal parental involvement in child-rearing. Shared parenting is a solution that can improve children’s lives and encourage cooperation between mothers and fathers.
