The prevalence of COVID-19 in Bulgaria in September dropped to one of the lowest levels in the European Union. This was reported by the director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Prof. Todor Kantardzhiev. According to him, this has led to neglect of the measures, although the masks have proven to be effective. He predicts that with the coming of the winter months, an increase in the number of infected in Bulgaria is expected.

The border, which is dangerous and should not be crossed, is 25 patients per 100,000 people, said Prof. Kantardzhiev. He believes that the measures are best observed in the capital’s shopping stores. The expert also commented on the situation in the schools and whether they are expected to be completely closed.

“I do not expect schools to be closed if people stop brazenly demonstrating not wearing masks. The greatest risk of infection is indoors, with loud conversations or singing.”

According to Prof. Kantardzhiev, because of the measures now, as an absolute number, the death rate from COVID-19 is lower than that from the flu, but if there were no masks, disinfection and distance, it would not be so. He revealed that in recent months the National Operational Headquarters has continued to work actively, but in silence, and said it was for the benefit of society. According to him, this week each health inspection will receive an analysis of how the pandemic is developing by district and at what thresholds of infection, what steps to take. Accordingly, the local headquarters will decide what to do. If there are more than 25 patients per 100,000 population in 14 days, this should keep us alert – it is about 1,500 patients a week, the professor explained.
