President Rumen Radev with sharp attacks on the prosecutor’s office. He accused her of setting a tone for violating the law, disregarding investigative secrecy and arbitrarily deciding what was “high public interest” and what was not. The head of state claims that the prosecutor’s office enters the spheres of other institutions without the necessary powers and capacity.
“That’s why we need an independent expertise of the recording with Borisov’s voice, according to which the recording of the chief prosecutor is mentioned as an enthusiastic fan of the prime minister”, he has said.
Radev did not stop there with the accusations. He spoke of a disgusting stain that could only be cleared with the truth. But this could not be done with a selective approach to cases and double standards. Moreover, he announced that this would not happen with “noisy persecution of the inconvenient and cover-up of the government”.
He also accused the real cases of trading in influence, which, according to him, materialized on a huge scale, and with public funds, of not being taken into account. He talks about abuses of public procurement, EU funds, gambling and low quality construction.
However, Radev refused in practice to comment on the case with his legal secretary Plamen Uzunov. The president said he could not judge by “fragmentary and biased information”. He expected all the data to come out of the prosecutor’s office – this is how he answered the question how Plamen Uzunov got a court decision.
As for the court, Radev was adamant that in Bulgaria it is he who decides whether some are guilty or innocent. He added:
“Unfortunately, in this situation, the prosecution is increasingly emerging as a political player supporting the prime minister’s crisis PR.”
