This is how the Facebook post of Slavi Trifonov, leader of the political party „There Is Such a People,“ begins. The text continues: „When I was a child, when I was very little, I entered a history competition. I think I was in seventh grade. I was assigned to write about the Proto-Bulgarians, but when I appeared before the committee, they asked me the following question. Just to note, since I am an adult, this was during the socialist era. So, the committee asked me the following question: How can we in one word destroy the claims of the Macedonians that Samuel was not a Bulgarian tsar?
I was very proud of myself for coming up with the answer and I proudly said: Basil II the Bulgar Killer. In addition, I have seen thousands of times what happens when I sing Bulgarian songs from the Macedonian region. „Back, back Kalina girl“, „When the woodes rustle“, „Mile Popyordanov lies sick“, „Yovanno Yovanke“.
We overthrew the government of Kiril Petkov because of Macedonia! Because I may not be understood, I will say it one more time: WE OVERTHROW KIRILL PETKOV’S GOVERNMENT BECAUSE OF MACEDONIA!
Macedonia is a part of my heart as a Bulgarian. Whether it’s called North, South, or Northwest, we are Bulgarians who love our homeland and our history. I deeply respect the Bulgarians currently living in North Macedonia; I sincerely support and honor them for their courage. I continue to think about the statement made by this person, Nikolovsky, yesterday. Of course, it is a humiliating nonsense that history will erase. But it will never erase our love for Macedonia!“
