Slavi Trifonov’s party „There is such a people“ failed to collect enough signatures to initiate a referendum on a presidential republic. This was announced by the leader himself, who again chose to address his compatriots on a serious topic on Facebook without giving a statement to the media.
He thanked all the signatories and clarified that the topic of what the political system of Bulgaria should be is already open, and the voters will soon see for themselves that the current one is not working well. We publish the full speech of Slavi Trifonov without editorial intervention:
“We collected 145,193 signatures from Bulgarian citizens – in Bulgaria and all over the world – for the holding of a referendum to convene a Great National Assembly to change the state structure of the Republic of Bulgaria from a parliamentary to a presidential republic.
These signatures are insufficient under the current law and no such referendum will now be initiated. We had to collect 400,000 signatures. It is not by chance that I say „now“, because we did not just collect signatures, we opened the topic of what the political system of Bulgaria should be. Because the current device is not working well and there needs to be an alternative.
And if a government is not formed now, or a short-lived and non-working government is formed, this time not we, but the people themselves will raise the issue of a presidential republic.
If we were a relatively normal country, for example – Switzerland, these signatures would be enough to initiate referendums. But that’s not why we are
„There is such a people“ will work hard to change the referendum law. Because in our opinion, direct democracy is the true expression and form of democracy. I want to thank everyone who participated and signed this initiative.
Thank you, your civil position is proof that it all made sense.
Once again, thank you!”
