Value-Added Tax (VAT) for diapers, children’s food products, books, and restaurant services in Bulgaria is being lowered as of today.
Major retail companies selling children’s food products announced that they are in the process of cutting the prices for the end consumer. The Bulgarian Association of Children’s Goods Retailers said that the price reduction is expected to be gradually introduced by smaller retailers as well, according to a news report by “bTV”.
Consumers will also benefit from lower book prices. This, however, will affect only newly published titles as VAT has already been included in the prices of already published books.
The end prices of restaurant services are not expected to change as the industry was one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The Bulgarian Revenue Service stressed that strict tax inspections are underway.
Iskra.bg recently reported that publishers are demanding the lower VAT for books to become a permanent measure. Industry representatives demand lower taxes for printing and distribution of books and called for new sources of governmental financing for library funds which to be achieved through the creation of a Library standard.
Another requested measure is for special financial support for bookstores in less densely populated areas in the country.
