This morning, the Parliament again failed to elect its Chairperson, even though Nikola Minchev’s candidacy was withdrawn from „We Continue the Change“. Thus, four people were again nominated for the post – Rosen Zhelyazkov from GERB, Christian Vigenin from BPS, Petar Petrov from „Vazrazhdane“ and Yordan Tsonev from MRF.

The members of “We Continue the Change“emphasized before the vote that they were not nominating their candidate in a spirit of dialogue and because of what happened yesterday in the National Assembly.

In the vote, it turned out that none of the four candidates again gathered the votes of more than half of the MPs. That is why there was a runoff between Yordan Tsonev and Rosen Zhelyazkov.

In the runoff, the GERB candidate was supported by 102 MPs, which turned out to be insufficient. Tsonev got the support of only 35 people.

In an attempt to get out of the parliamentary crisis and the unprecedented situation, Chairman of the meeting, Vezhdi Rashidov, announced an hour’s break in order to hold new consultations between the parliamentary groups. Whether this will be enough to elect a Chairperson and enable the National Assembly to function and open the constitutional procedure for forming a government, it remains to be seen.
