The head of the Department for Counteracting Drug Trafficking and Drug Distribution from the Directorate-General for the Fight against Organized Crime (DCFAOC) was detained after receiving a bribe. The head of the sector in the same directorate was arrested separately, as well as another employee of the Ministry of Interior. They were detained for up to 24 hours. This became clear during a briefing with the participation of Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev and Interior Minister Mladen Marinov.
Minutes earlier, Geshev commented on Twitter:
„The time of the untouchables is over! Regardless of where and even less so if it refers to the highest anti-drug officer. Congratulations for the work of the „Internal Security“ of the Ministry of Interior and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office.“
The actions of the authorities started after 17:00 yesterday and searches of many sites and homes are currently underway.
“In short, what is being investigated in the case – the activities of an organized criminal group, dealing mainly with bribery and logistics, assistance, umbrella on the activities of organized criminal groups involved in drug trafficking and drug distribution not only in Bulgaria“, Geshev reported.
According to him, these officials are the top leaders in the fight against drugs in the country, as well as the people who are the main points of contact of our international partners – not only from the EU, in the field of combating drug trafficking.
The Prosecutor General added that their work is not to solve personal problems in other structures. Whether and what changes will be made in the DCFAOC is within the competence of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Internal Affairs.
“Every herd has a carcass, as the people have said. What we are doing should not be perceived as a bad sign for the Ministry of Interior. There are also problems in the prosecutor’s office, but we are solving our problems. For those who work with criminals, who stretch their umbrellas, who have chosen to work with crime, and not against it – me and the Interior Minister, we will be uncompromising”, Geshev threatened.
