The majority in the National Assembly once again rejected the request for a referendum where voters would decide whether the euro should be introduced in Bulgaria as an official currency or not. The proposal was rejected with the votes of the GERB-SDS, “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria” and Movement for Rights and Freedoms deputies.
The motion was tabled by the „Revival“ and “There is such a People” parties, which believe that a referendum should be held with the Bulgarian citizens. The question in the referendum, which will not take place anyway, was formulated as follows:
“Do you agree that the Bulgarian lev should be the only official currency in Bulgaria until 2043?”
In parliament, Kostadin Kostadinov, the leader of “Revival”, again pointed out arguments against the euro. According to him, the European Union is not developing at the moment and it is harmful in its current form.
“We have said many times that if it is not reformed, there should be a referendum on leaving.”
For his part, Martin Dimitrov said that it has long been clear to all Bulgarian citizens that the Revival Party wants to join the geopolitical organisation BRICS, which includes Russia and China, and to leave the European Union. For this reason, he voted against holding such a referendum.
