The Central Election Commission must become professional and fully independent. This is the opinion of the sociologist and former CEC spokesman Tsvetozar Tomov. He was adamant to „BNT“ that this would not happen after the adopted amendments to the Electoral Code. They are on the proposal of „There are such а people“ and provide for the members of the Commission and its leadership to be appointed by the President. The nominations will be made by the political forces that have representation in the National Assembly, followed by a public debate on the candidacies.
Tomov is also of the opinion that the decision for entirely machine voting will be the big challenge in the next elections.
According to him, the change in the number of polling stations abroad will justify the growing interest of our compatriots abroad to participate in the vote in Bulgaria. He gave the example of Great Britain, where, according to him, the situation created on April 4 will be overcome. There the Bulgarians waited for 5-6 hours in order to be able to exercise their right to vote. Applications were submitted for the opening of 88 polling stations, but there were only 35. The situation was the same in the United States. The sociologist believes that a problem may appear elsewhere.
He also pointed out the mistakes he said the Central Election Commission had made. One of them is that it did not punish Boyko Borissov, although there were reasons for that. Complaints were also filed, but the CEC did not take the necessary action.
For Tomov, the Commission’s biggest mistake was that it did not organize well enough the way of voting for the quarantined persons and the citizens isolated due to illness.
