Today’s news is that Sofia is preparing a sharp increase in tourist taxes. This was written by Vladislav Panev on the social network Facebook. We’d like to publish his comment without any editorial changes:
„Today’s news is that Sofia is preparing a sharp increase in tourist taxes (by 2.5 to 10 times) with the promise that it will improve product advertising. Back in 2021, at my proposal as a city councillor and in the midst of the COVID crisis, we reduced the annual fee per bed sold through platforms like Airbnb from BGN 250 to BGN 25.
For 4 years it was that much, which helped lighten the business. This was the only tax reduction in the last 10 years. Now, they are planning to raise it back to 250.“
„In my opinion, these are extremely unreasonable proposals. It’s better to keep taxes low, and the Municipality not to do anything for tourism – the businesses are already handling that task well.
Just by looking at the many groups touring the city center with free tours, it’s clear that business is doing well.
I have already spoken to councillors against the idea of raising the tourist tax. It’s a shame that the vote will take place after the elections, and we won’t be able to see who voted in support of what.“
