From January 1, 2024 in Bulgaria we will pay in euros. This is an informative date for our country’s entry into the eurozone. It was announced in a draft for changes in a decree of the Council of Ministers, which guarantees the activity of the Coordination Council for the preparation of Bulgaria for membership in the euro area.
By June 30, 2021, the Coordination Council needs to develop a draft National Plan for the introduction of the euro in our country. The Council will be co-chaired by the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) and more changes are expected.
The responsibilities of the individual institutions in the country for the introduction of the euro have also been signed. It is envisaged that the BNB will be responsible for the ATM software, so that it is certain that they will pay the amounts in euros. The BNB will be responsible for the appearance of Bulgarian euro coins.
The Council’s Consumer Protection Working Group will consider recalculating prices from Bulgarian levs to euros. The aim is to avoid the vicious practice of traders rounding prices in their favor. This activity will be strictly monitored in this way. “A fair introduction of the euro“ campaign will be launched.
The Council Communications Working Group will produce information materials for the various target groups, which will include students, pensioners, households, people with special needs and ethnic minorities. It will also develop a special information site for the euro.
