“It is no coincidence that this advertisement is above a tunnel on Hemus highway. It reminds us of our historical roots in a magical way. “Hemus” has probably been under construction since the time of the Thracians. The knocking of holes in the car body keeps drivers from sinking into the temptations of modern consumer society.”
This is what Yavor Bojankov, the MP from “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria”, commented on Facebook, continuing:
“The tunnels themselves have been repaired since time immemorial. Historical sources are silent about the beginning, it remains shrouded in mystique.
“Quick work is a shame for the master”, our people have said. That is why attention to detail in these repairs has been elevated to a cult. And the price doesn’t matter. Bulgarians have lost their lives here while waiting for the repairs. One feels the weight of history entering the tunnel.
It turns us to the spiritual. Lost in the hustle and bustle of our short earthly journey, it is desirable, if not obligatory, to recross ourselves at the entrance and make our prayer.
The place also symbolizes the timelessness of the building of our nation. If the renovations were completed, we would likely lose our sense of direction. We would be left without purpose in life, as the saying goes. But here’s the thing, when one pipe ends, the next begins. Folk costume again. Again the cake and mince pies.
Traditions endure and are passed on to the next generation.”
Bozhanov: During my time in the MEG, no irregularities were found by the Audit Office!
