The Central Election Commission did not resist the political pressure, the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court is a step in the right direction, commented Nadezhda Yordanova, the People’s Representative from the “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” parliamentary group. According to her, yesterday’s decision is a step towards restoring confidence in the electoral process and towards the fact that in Bulgaria there can be a functioning legal state, and that the court can rule under the rule of law.
“The losers in this case are the Bulgarian citizens who failed to exercise their right to vote with machines”, Yordanova commented.
According to her, the invalid votes for municipal councilors in the capital are more than 17,000 ballots against the background of 22,000 ballots – “I do not support anyone.” The quota for a municipal councilor is 5,500 votes, that is, 3 municipal councilors have “disappeared into thin air” because the Central Electoral Commission did not resist political pressure, she added.
The Central Electoral Commission should not be formed on a quota basis according to the political representation in the parliament, the deputy believes, adding that it should be a truly independent body where professionalism comes to the fore. According to her, the path to this is clear – changes are needed in the Electoral Code, and why not a new one.
